چکیده

Meaningful tests of theoretical predictions of magnetic multilayer properties require the fabrication of multilayers with nearly the same atomic scale precision as the theoretical models. Multilayers grown epitaxially on single crystal Fe whisker substrates come very close to this ideal standard. We have investigated the growth, magnetic structure, and exchange coupling of Fe/(Ag, Au, Cr, Mn, V, Cu, or Al)/Fe(100) whisker structures primarily using Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED) and Scanning Electron Microscopy with Polarization Analysis (SEMPA), and in some systems, confocal Magneto-optic Kerr Effect (MOKE) microscopy. In cases of nearly layer by layer growth, the measured oscillatory coupling periods and strengths agree well with theoretical predictions. For rougher growth, less predictable non-collinear coupling is generally observed.

Structure and magnetism of Fe/Si multilayers grown by ion-beam sputtering.

Ion-beam sputtering has been used to prepare Fe/Si multilayers on a variety of substrates and over a wide range of temperatures. Small-angle x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy experiments show that the layers are heavily intermixed although a composition gradient is maintained. When the spacer layer is an amorphous iron silicide, the magnetic properties of the multilayers ar...

Enhanced interfacial magnetic coupling of Gd /Fe multilayers.

The spatial extent zeta(AFM) and strength J(AFM) of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange coupling at buried Gd /Fe interfaces in ferrimagnetic [Gd(50 A)Fe(15,35 A)](15) sputtered multilayers is obtained from combined x-ray resonance magnetic reflectivity and magnetic circular dichroism measurements. zeta(AFM) is 4.1(7) A or approximately 1-2 interatomic distances in bulk Gd and Fe; J(AFM) is 10...

Magnetic Properties of Epitaxial and Polycrystalline Fe/Si Multilayers

Fe/Si multilayers with antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling have been grown via ion-beam sputtering on both glass and single-crystal substrates. High-angle x-ray diffraction measurements show that both sets of films have narrow Fe peaks, implying a large crystallite size and crystalline iron silicide spacer layers. Low-angle x-ray diffraction measurements show that films grown on glass have ro...

Exchange Coupling and Magnetization Profiles of Binary and Ternary Magnetic Multilayers

Within a spin-polarized LMTO approach in the Atomic-Sphere approximation we calculate ab initio the magnetic properties of various binary and ternary multilayers composed of Fe, Co, Ni, Cr, V and Cu. The emphasis lies on the indirect exchange interaction of the magnetic sandwiches across the antiferromagnetic or non-magnetic spacers, and on the profiles of the intrinsic resp. induced magnetic m...

Spin-Dependent Interface Transmission and Reflection in Magnetic Multilayers

First-principles calculations of transmission and reflection from Ag/Fe, Au/Fe, Cu/Co, and Cu/Ni interfaces show very strong spin dependence that differs significantly from expectations based on free electron approximations. The results can be used to understand both the giant magnetoresistance and the oscillatory exchange coupling observed in magnetic multilayers of these materials. The spin d...
